The Holocaust And The Jewish State

Thursday, Mar 30, 2023 from 4:30pm to 7:00pm
St. Augustine Preparatory School
611 Cedar Avenue

Although the juxtaposition regarding the time frame of the Holocaust and the establishment of the State of Israel is evident, historians must be careful to avoid the “post hoc ergo proctor hoc” fallacy. At this workshop we will examine the indirect links between these two epochal events. We will explore issues including: the Jewish and Palestinian claims to Palestine; the Balfour Agreement; Zionism in the interwar years; the impact of WWII and the Holocaust on Jewish migration; and the struggle faced by Holocaust survivors upon arriving in Israel.

Using Power-Point, film and other media, participants can anticipate a lively interchange of ideas and debate as we explore this most-controversial, and complicated issue. The workshop is for students, teachers and members of the public ready to listen and engage in this seminal subject.

Presenter: Anthony Iaconelli. Mr. Iaconelli is an Alfred Lerner Fellow in Holocaust Studies from The Jewish Foundation for the Righteous and Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at St. Augustine Preparatory in New Jersey. He is also one of only 500 Master Educators committed to teaching and preserving the Legacy of Righteous Gentiles, non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust.

PD HOURS: 3.0 professional development hours will be granted by the N.J. Commission on Holocaust Education and is compliments of St. Augustine Preparatory School, Jewish Federation of Cumberland, Gloucester & Salem Counties, and the N.J. Commission on Holocaust Education
