South Mountain Reservation

South Orange Avenue and Cherry Lane

The South Mountain Reservation, the largest park in the Essex County Park System, is a unique 2,110-acre public land. Endowed with hills, rivers, and woodlands, the Reservation has been preserved primarily in its wild state. Numerous trails and overlooks offer inspiring scenery: vistas of New York City, a dramatic 25-foot waterfall at Hemlock Falls, the cascade of Maple Brook in the deep woods, and millponds, streams, and open fields in the interior valley. After more than 100 years, it remains a green island in the midst of a sea of urbanization.

Some friends and I went there to walk around the pond. They have a nice walking path that is paved and it's nicely landscaped. There's a nice scenery and they have bird houses on posts in the water and we watched the birds flying in and out of their nests feeding their babies. I'm glad I brought my camera. It was a very nice day They also have well-maintained restrooms and a pavilion with seating. Definitely worth a visit. It would be a great place to bring your lunch and have a little picnic

One of my favorite places to visit. Trails are just perfect for a quick late afternoon trek after work, or weekend hike (if you're not looking to drive far). Trails are fairly easy, towards moderate. A bit rocky in sections but not much to discourage a beginner. Not well marked, so, if you're not familiar with the trails you might get lost (as with any hike, use caution - be prepared and bring a map). Dogs allowed - on a leash.

Great dog park beautiful scenery. Friendly dogs and owners. Never had any problems taking my dog there. If someone with an unruly dog shows up others are quick to join together and make that person leave. It really is a strong responsible dog community up there. The place is even dedicated to the dogs that served in 9-11.

Very nice place for refreshing yourself. Very large place. Lots of picnic spot here. Real natural beauty you can find here. Place for barbecue and play spots. There have a place call dog park. It’s for the dog. Very secure place. Police officers are always there. There have lake and very beautiful places to visit. One problem sometimes you probably loose mobile network. So have to guide people whoever will go with you.

It was my first time here & that's pretty shameful because I've lived in the area for 18 years. Anywho, this place will give you a nice workout. The waterfall is nice & people are very friendly. Funny how a little warm weather & the outdoors can bring out the best in people. The reservation is vast I believe it outlines 4 towns. I slept like a log after that hike. Loved it & will definitely make it a weekly stop in my workout schedule.
