Mission:

Studio Montclair Inc. is a non-profit organization of exhibiting professional and emerging artists and others interested in the visual arts. The mission of the organization is to promote culture and education in the visual arts.

SMI’s History:

Studio Montclair’s history stretches back to February 1997, when a show titled “The Montclair Art Colony: Past and Present” opened at the Montclair Art Museum. Visitors to the show were invited to extend their artistic tour to downtown Montclair, where several galleries mounted a show called “The Rest of the Colony,” organized by five local artists. In all, the work of 46 local artists appeared at local venues.

“An incredible success!” crowed Antoinette Martin of The Montclair Times, and Studio Montclair Inc. was born.

Presently, the organization has grown to almost 300 members, including artists from the local area and throughout the country. “We offer an array of opportunities for artists to bring their work to the public,” said founding SMI President Virginia S. Block. “At the same time, we are conscious of promoting and enhancing the image of Montclair, New Jersey as a center of the visual arts.”
